The importance of change to any organization is essential to growth, and it is the responsibility of leadership to explain both why change is required and how the change will take place to the organizational culture. Leaders should always be available and should seek out those essential methods of communication with the culture around them in order to achieve successful change. The concept of this study was to seek out the effect of communication on organizational change within the realm of higher education, primarily a small private Catholic university. This qualitative, ethnographic study looked at the organizational culture of a small Catholic university and used focus groups and observations to find how communication currently flows through the culture and what methods need to be in place to make sure communication flows achieve the changes required for success. Along with large, multinational corporations, institutions of higher education also require change in order to stay competitive and seek out ways to achieve a quality product that will attract and retain students. This study sought out how communication influenced those attempts and what the university in question must do to achieve the changes in order to succeed. The individuals within the groups were very open in their comments and the data shows that the consensus is that communication is currently very ineffective. It was generally agreed that communication must be corrected in order to succeed in any level of change, and many ideas of how communication should be initiated were given. This study has shown that organizational leadership must not isolate among themselves the decision for change but instead access and consider utilizing what those within the culture can. Future researchers can take the findings from this study of how to create positive chains of communication and follow another institution through a change process that is using the suggested methods to see how leadership and the culture come together to make the needed change.
