The purpose of the research study was to determine if the Dancing Classrooms program has any relationship to improved student performance as defined by the required academic tests administered by the Nebraska Department of Education. Dancing Classrooms is a program for social and emotional development, which uses the art of ballroom dance to teach fifth grade students appropriate social skills. The program has been used in selected schools in the Omaha Public Schools (OPS) since 2006.

The state-mandated standardized achievement tests for math and reading are called the Nebraska State Accountability tests (NeSA). This research was to analyze the NeSA student performance test scores for reading and math in schools of similar socio-economic and diversity levels, comparing schools that participate in the Dancing Classrooms Program with those that do not. Data were retrieved from the Omaha Public Schools website, the Nebraska Department Education Report card, and the Nebraska Educational Profile websites. Scores were compared using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 23.
