The topic of this dissertation was the perceived use of social networking sites and marital quality among heterosexual couples. This topic of this study was relevant because the use of social networking sites has become mainstream. Previous studies conducted looked at relationships and Facebook. The current study looked at the enhancements of social media and the multitude of social media apps, and marriage and its role across generations. The study conducted was a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational design using a stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR). The population consisted of heterosexual, married individuals between the ages of 18 and 50 who have been married between three and 10 years. The sample derived was legally married and cohabitating individuals involved in a first, heterosexual marriage between three and 10 years, between the ages of 18 and 50, who are not transgendered, and have no physical or mental health concerns. The population was acquired by utilizing SurveyMonkey to capture the aforementioned population. Then, specific survey questions allowed those that did not fit the criteria, to be eliminated, leaving the above sample. The data analysis involved finding the answers to three research questions. The first research question was: are there relationships between the independent variables (race, gender, the participant spouse's time on social media, the number of years married, age, employment status, and educational level) and the dependent variable of marital quality as reported by the participating spouse? The second research question was: is there a predictive relationship between the independent variables and the outcome variable of marital quality? The final research question is: of the seven independent variables which variable or combination of variables best predicts marital quality? The results found that relationships do exist amongst some of the independent variables and they are predictive relationships. Race was found to be more strongly correlated to marital quality with a significance level of .001 and an unstandardized coefficient of 3.084 with the degrees of freedom (df) being 57. Recommendations for future research and practice was suggested to test for varying factors that could predict marital quality.
