For many people, finding a lifelong partner to share love and life experiences increases in importance as life progresses (Laborde, vanDommelen-Gonzalez, & Minnis, 2014). With the divorce rate at nearly 50% in the United States, it may be important to examine factors and characteristics that could be potential warning signs of couple conflict and relational dissatisfaction (Ashby, Rice, & Kutchins, 2008). Some researchers suggest dyadic conflict can be a possible consequence of perfectionistic individuals: the perfectionistic partner is perceived as being demanding, with unfair standards of love, and these expectations may often cause anger and hostility, resulting in dyadic conflict (Mackinnon et al., 2012). The current study examines the impact of adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism on couples and relationship conflict and satisfaction. We explore the mediating influence of perfectionism on conflict and relationship satisfaction using the Gottman model of Sound Relationship House. Results indicated that only socially prescribed perfectionism was a significant contributing influence on relationship satisfaction and conflict and, therefore, it may be wise to look at other factors outside the scope of perfectionism as it relates to relationships.
