Hospitalization on an adolescent behavioral health unit, provides opportunity of intensive treatment, but also involves the risk of disruption to the adolescent's life, therefore it is important to know whether adolescents benefit from their inpatient care. The current study was designed to conduct an exploratory evaluation of such a unit. A sample of 29 adolescents admitted to the unit was administered self-report measures of depression and anxiety at admission, and discharge. The goals of the evaluation were to determine if the adolescents who participated in the program demonstrated fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression from admission to discharge, and if gender predicted symptom improvement. The Children's Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) and the Beck's Youth Anxiety Inventory were used as outcome measures. Paired samples t-tests were conducted to compare scores on both the depression and anxiety scales from admission to discharge, and results indicated that there was a significant improvement in symptoms. A repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to analyze gender differences in symptoms of depression and anxiety at admission and discharge, with results showing a significant difference in depressive symptoms between genders at admission; however, no significant gender differences were found at discharge. There are several limitations of the study that need to be considered, including the absence of a control group, the sample size, and demographic homogeneity among participants. Additionally, factors that may have contributed to symptom improvement, including use of medication and program participation could not be included in the analysis due to the small size of the sample. Further evaluation with a larger sample, exploring predictors of improvement is recommended to assist decision-making by the program.
