Attachment theory suggests how key components of the child/caregiver dyad might be at work in the life of the older adult who lives with a companion animal(s). This study explored whether older adults with high levels of attachment to a companion dog might experience fewer feelings of social isolation and social loneliness and higher levels of self-esteem than those older adults who demonstrated low levels of pet attachment. Dog owners age 55 and older living in suburban communities adjacent to several large metropolitan cities in the Midwest participated in the study. Women (n = 57) represented 64% of respondents and men (n = 32) represented 36%. The average age of respondents was 66.9 (SD = 7.69) and the average length of dog ownership was 5.6 years (SD = 3.97). They were predominantly white, 93% (n = 83) while 7% (n = 6) described their race as Other. Living arrangements included 27% (n = 24) who lived alone and 73% (n = 65) who lived with someone. Pet attachment was measured by the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (LAPS). Social Isolation was measured by the 6-item Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6). Social and emotional loneliness was measured using the 6-item short form of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale. Finally, self-esteem was measured with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The results revealed that higher levels of pet attachment negatively correlated with social isolation. For the older adult, gender did not impact the experience of pet attachment, social isolation, self-esteem or loneliness. Results did reveal that women at the older end of age spectrum (age 70+) experienced high levels of pet attachment while men who are older (age 70+) reported low levels of pet attachment.
