The theory of core self-evaluation (CSE) brings dispositional variables into discussions of work or social involvement where researchers seek to understand how adults balance a wide variety of experiences and perceptions. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational research was to examine to what degree CSE, operationalized as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-monitoring, predict job satisfaction and life satisfaction for adults 40 years of age and older. A snowball sample of 160 participants responded to an online survey including the following scales: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, the Revised Self-Monitoring Scale, the Michigan Occupational Assessment Questionnaire-Job Satisfaction Scale, and the Life Satisfaction Index A. Multiple linear regressions assessed the relationships of CSE and life or job satisfaction, while a hierarchical regression assessed job satisfaction's mediating effect. Results indicated positive, predictive relationships exist between CSE and life satisfaction (F(3, 156) = 15.939, p < .001; R2 = .220) and between CSE and job satisfaction (F(3, 156) = 8.675, p < .001; R2 = .126). Job satisfaction was not a mediator of the CSE-life satisfaction relationship, but acted as another predictor (F(4, 155) = 17.049, p < .001). Jointly predictive in the relationship were self-esteem, one component of CSE (beta = .357, t = 4.166, p < .001), and job satisfaction (beta = --.288, t = --3.979, p < .001). Results corroborated those reported for 18 to 32 years-olds allowing cautious application of previous conclusions to older populations.
