Perhaps the most important goal of my research, and the compilation of this specific material, is to defeat the commonly held assumption that there is a "clash of civilizations" based on fundamentally different ideologies of the "East" and the "West." My research will look at the formation of this Western mindset, and its institutionalization in political theory, though acknowledging the ideology is pervasive, occupying the discourse of academics, politicians, legal actors, and the media at large. Following this, my research looks at the development of the current Turkish political culture and the way this form of secularism challenges the boundaries of existing Western theory. The goal of my research is to show that these categories, of religion, of secularism, and of modernity, are constructed, and therefore, are subject to contestation and reformulation. One must ask who and what decides "modernity" to understand the political force it has in the world today. Once we understand the culturally specific location of these ideologies then we can acknowledge the dangers in applying them as universal and "natural" categories.
