Organizations continue to rely on information technology (IT) as a foundational element, yet poor IT project success continues to impact growth and innovation. Research into IT project success is widespread yet has focused on high-level project management attributes, not specific IT solutions. A review of the research literature revealed that the technical experience of a project manager had not been investigated as having a potential relationship with regard to IT project success. The central research study question was to examine to what degree project management competence, professional experience, education, and IT experiences of IT project managers each influence project success. A quantitative, non-experience, correlational methodology was chosen based on the hypothesis testing objectives to measure the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. The research study population consisted of project managers with at least five years of project management experience and experience managing IT projects. Participants volunteered for the study by completing an online questionnaire. Multiple regression statistical analysis was performed for each of the independent variables; project manager competence, project management experience, education, and IT experience with respect to the project success dependent variable. Results of the regression showed a significant correlation of competency, project management experience, and technical experience with project success, while education failed to show a significant correlation.
