A conceptual and therapeutic analysis of fear
[electronic resource] /by Sergio Starkstein. - Cham :Springer International Publishing :2018. - xiv, 299 p. :digital ;22 cm.
1.Introduction -- 2.The Epicurean concept of fear and the road to ataraxia -- 3.Roman fears -- 4.Montaigne's Essays -- 5. Thomas Hobbes and fear -- 6. Descartes and the mechanization of fear -- 7. James's fears and Wittgenstein's therapy -- 8. Sigmund Freud and the psychoanalytical concept of fear -- 9. The medicalization and social construction of fear in the age of anxiety -- 10. Conclusions -- Index.
There is an important gap in the philosophical literature concerning the concept of fear and its remedies, and this book has been designed to examine different concepts of fear that inform its therapy. Structured as a historical-philosophical investigation of the concept of fear, this book is not a purely historical analysis of fear but also provides a broad brushwork rendition of the main concepts of fear as presented by selected philosophers and thinkers, and how they have approached its therapy.
