This thesis examines Roald Dahl's adult fiction within the lens of the gothic genre. Specifically, four of his adult short stories, "Lamb to the Slaughter," "The Way up to Heaven," "William and Mary," and "The Landlady," are examined to reveal how Dahl evokes a feeling of the uncanny. Drawing on Coventry Patmore's "The Angel in the House" poem, I illustrate how the female characters are represented as conforming to stereotypical gender roles. However, when these seemingly submissive women are pushed beyond their limits, they seize the opportunity to violently lash out against patriarchal society in completely unexpected ways. Dahl's adult fiction thus provides a compelling psychological commentary on the complex relationship between men and women. He frames the domestic scene as a place rife with masked and potentially violent power struggles, while also articulating the underlying paranoia of men about women in control.
