Cognitive radio is an emerging wireless technology that exploits unused spectrum by secondary users for communication purpose as it is cost effective. Spectrum sensing plays an important role in detecting these unused frequencies for cognitive purpose, but for sensing a broad bandwidth, a high sampling rate is required, which is impractical and demands expensive hardware. So, compressed sensing is considered for reducing the sampling rate requirements, but still being able to detect the signal, later we obtain the theoretical results for wideband spectrum sensing method based on a method proposed in the literature, using Matlab and also discuss its execution using USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral), GNU Radio and Matlab RTM. In this thesis, we focused on two parts (i) implementing signal design projects like FM- RADIO, DVB-T video transmission and GSM network using USRP transceiver module. (ii) a study of wideband spectrum sensing technology using compressed sensing, its estimation by CoSamp recovery algorithm and applying the energy detection algorithm to obtain the ROC performance curves. We also implemented the discussed wideband spectral technique using USRP module and GNURadio signal processing software.
