The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to define and explore law enforcement executives' perceptions and lived experiences of intimate partner violence as it relates to the implementation and use of domestic violence policy in Louisiana's law enforcement agencies. A group of law enforcement executives were asked to be interviewed voluntarily. After collecting the data, it was analyzed to ascertain themes related to the executives’ perceptions and lived experiences of managing officers and implementation of a policy regarding intimate partner violence perpetrated by officers. The analysis revealed factors regarding leadership styles as well as how officers are disciplined after being involved in an act of intimate partner violence. The Oath of Honor is an important foundational principle for law enforcement officers. This study showed some executives viewed intimate partner violence as an anti-social behavior that is not tolerated. Since the Oath of Honor was broken the only disciplinary action was in most cases to dismiss the individual from the force. It also revealed different leadership styles used to manage officers involved in domestic violence as well as set examples for others to follow. It highlighted the importance of an officer’s mental health as it relates to being fit for duty. Lastly, the study revealed issues such as alcoholism and suicide as concerns coupled with intimate partner violence are often problems that officers cope with that often lead to a tragic event.
