The purpose of this qualitative exploratory research was to explore the secure online-voting strategies. The central research question was: What are the secure online-voting strategies information assurance specialists need to increase the millennial generation voting turnouts in a general election". Existing literature reviewed revealed concerns about potential technical security challenges with online-voting system implementation. Thus, the research purpose is to explore strategies to secure online voting. The sample consisted of 10 cybersecurity/information assurance specialists and IT professionals from all over the United States. The exploratory qualitative research used semi-structured questions to conduct interviews with the participants. The analysis of data collected generated these key themes put into major topic areas that are vital to understanding the strategies necessary to secure online voting. The seven topic areas that form the foundation of the data analysis: (a) Assessment of the security strategies (b) Understanding online-voting environment-requirements and capabilities (c) Managing and recognizing risks involved (d)Addressing attacks, risks, threats and vulnerabilities (e) Protecting access to network and privacy information (f) Addressing identification and Data availability (g) Feasibility, training, procedure and policies. More importantly, further investigation of the themes to enhance understanding produced the following findings (a) Assessment of the security strategies includes the establishment of multiple layers of protection instead of relying on a single defense mechanism (b) Managing and recognizing risks based on the nature of Internet's existing architecture (c) strategies addressing attacks, risks, threats and vulnerabilities in an online-voting environment (d) Protecting access to network and privacy by implementing identity and access management solutions to secure the data and resources. The threats to online-voting are significant. However, some potential security direction for further enhancement is also identified in this study.
