Das Buch ist eine kommentierte Quellensammlung zur Geschichte der Sozialpsychologie. Es verfolgt den Zweck, mittels des Studiums von Dokumenten aus der Geschichte und Vorgeschichte des Faches Reflexionen eigener theoretischer und praktischer Tätigkeit anzuregen. In 30 Abschnitten werden Texte vorgestellt, die von der griechischen Antike bis zur jüngeren Vergangenheit reichen. Jedem Abschnitt werden Erläuterungen zum Stellenwert und wissenschaftshistorischen Kontext des jeweiligen Textes vorangestellt. Dabei werden insbesondere Arbeiten zur Theoriebildung, Beiträge zur Erschließung von sich immer weiter differenzierenden Gegenstandsbereichen, die Ausstrahlung auf diverse Bereiche der Gesellschaft und Praxis und die Zunahme interdisziplinärer Vernetzungen erörtert.
