Perineal Trauma at Childbirth
[electronic resource] /edited by Khaled M. K. Ismail. - 1st ed. 2016. - X, 191 p. 34 illus., 22 illus. in color.online resource.
Perineal Trauma: A Historical And International Perspective -- Anatomy and Physiology of the pelvic floor -- Perineal mapping -- Risk factors for Perineal Trauma -- Intrapartum Interventions and Risk of Perineal Trauma -- Assessment and Postnatal Management of Genital Tract Trauma -- The Role of Imaging in assessing Perineal Trauma -- Perineal Trauma and its impact on Women’s Health -- Perineal Trauma and Pelvic Floor Muscle Training -- Management of Perineal Trauma Complications: The Role of the MDT -- Role of Training to reduce Perineal Trauma at an Organisational Level.
This book details the prevention and management of perineal trauma during childbirth, which affects millions of women worldwide every year. A repair for such trauma is one of the commonest procedures undertaken in medicine, but this procedure is not without a number of issues. It is an area of clinical practice that falls between two subspecialties (maternal medicine and urogynecology), is assessed and repaired by two independent professions (obstetricians and midwives), and its complications are managed by a large multidisciplinary team. The book is also written and edited with all of these medical professions in mind. Perineal Trauma at Childbirth provides high-level evidence demonstrating that proper assessment and repair of perineal trauma can significantly improve outcomes for women, while reviewing the considerable benefits of trauma prevention to long-term outcomes, particularly for higher grades of perineal trauma. There are dedicated chapters on reducing the risk of perinea trauma, anal sphincter injuries, wound complications and postnatal urinary incontinence. The anatomy and physiology, clinical assessment, pelvic floor imaging, perineal mapping, methods and materials for repair and a framework for implementation of evidence into practice are also covered in depth.
