Interconnected Networks
[electronic resource] /edited by Antonios Garas. - 1st ed. 2016. - XVI, 229 p. 75 illus., 63 illus. in color.online resource. - Understanding Complex Systems,1860-0832. - Understanding Complex Systems,.
A tipping point in the structural formation of interconnected networks -- Multilayer networks: metrics and spectral properties -- An ensemble perspective on multi-layer networks -- Interconnecting networks: the role of connector links -- Vulnerability of interdependent networks and networks of networks -- A unified approach to percolation processes on multiplex networks -- How much interconnected should networks be for cooperation to thrive? -- The Cacophony of Interconnected Networks -- Several multiplexes in the same city: The role of socioeconomic differences in urban mobility -- The weak core and the structure of elites in social multiplex networks -- Interbank markets and multiplex networks: centrality measures and statistical null models -- The financial system as a nexus of interconnected networks. .
This volume provides an introduction to and overview of the emerging field of interconnected networks which include multi layer or multiplex networks, as well as networks of networks. Such networks present structural and dynamical features quite different from those observed in isolated networks. The presence of links between different networks or layers of a network typically alters the way such interconnected networks behave – understanding the role of interconnecting links is therefore a crucial step towards a more accurate description of real-world systems. While examples of such dissimilar properties are becoming more abundant – for example regarding diffusion, robustness and competition – the root of such differences remains to be elucidated. Each chapter in this topical collection is self-contained and can be read on its own, thus making it also suitable as reference for experienced researchers wishing to focus on a particular topic.
