Die terminologische Kopplung von Medien und Globalisierung wirft einen spezifischen Blick auf aktuelle Prozesse ökonomischer, soziopolitischer, technologischer und kultureller Veränderung. Die Erde wird hier nicht als Summe trennscharf voneinander separierbarer Regionen begriffen, sondern erscheint vielmehr als deterritorialisierter Schauplatz transnationaler Bewegungen durch Ströme gegen Grenzen von Zeit und Raum, die nicht zuletzt medial geprägt sind. Denn Medien spielen für die Reproduktion von Kapital, aber auch die postkoloniale Distribution von Kultur eine immer zentralere Rolle. Ökonomische Macht reguliert dabei die Zirkulation der kulturellen Flüsse zwischen Zentren und Peripherien auf dem Globus, dessen Regionen in stetigem Austausch stehen. Globalisierung meint also die Zirkulation von Menschen, Waren und Daten in einem Verhältnis erdumspannender Kommunikation auf allen Ebenen sozialer Erfahrung.
