Met deze geheel vernieuwde en herziene versie van FIKS kunnen logopedisten en klinisch linguïsten fonologische stoornissen verminderen bij afasiepatiënten. Bij deze therapie wordt aandacht besteed aan de fonologische analyse van gesproken taal (het inputkanaal) en aan de selectie en ordening van fonemen in de taalproductie (het outputkanaal). FIKS is primair bedoeld voor de behandeling van afasiepatiënten, maar kan ook worden ingezet bij de behandeling van dysartrie of dyslexie. FIKS bestaat uit meer dan 1000 oefeningen voor, gemiddeld, een half jaar therapie van 2 uur per week. Het therapieprogramma bestaat uit 3 onderdelen: fonologische inputroute, fonologische outputroute en fonologische in- en outputroute. Daarnaast zijn een duidelijke handleiding en een set therapieformulieren onderdeel van de complete set van FIKS. Op basis van praktijkervaringen met FIKS is in deze nieuwe editie het volgende gewijzigd: De oefeningen zijn systematischer ingedeeld. Extra oefeningen zijn toegevoegd, o.a. meer letterinvuloefeningen, letteranagrammen, oefeningen op zinsniveau, lettergrepen afmaken en wordfluency met beginletter. Nieuwe oefeningen zijn toegevoegd, o.a. aardrijkskundige namen, samenstellingen, meerlettergrepige woorden met foneemgelijkenis, minimale paren en complexere woorden en zinnen met consonantclusters. Woorden zijn beter geordend, o.b.v. grammaticale woordklasse, woordlengte en complexiteit. Te abstracte of ouderwetse woorden zijn vervangen door concretere en modernere woorden Instructie bij de oefeningen is minder strikt, waardoor de logopedist flexibeler is in het gebruik van het therapiemateriaal. Nieuwe duidelijker indeling: 3 delen in plaats van 10. FIKS is onderzocht in een aantal gerandomiseerde trials: de Rotterdamse Afasie Therapie Studies. In deze onderzoeken is FIKS toegepast bij 300 patiënten in ongeveer 60 centra. De specifieke vooruitgang door FIKS kwam o.a. tot uiting bij het herkennen van bestaande en niet-bestaande woorden (fonologische inputroute) en bij het nazeggen van nonwoorden (fonologische outputroute). .
