Dieses Buch befasst sich mit alltäglichen Shoppingpraktiken chinesischer Studierender und ihrer Bedeutung für die Entwicklung konsumistischer Subjektivitäten. Ausgehend von ethnographischen und videographischen Untersuchungen werden Praktiken des Aus- und Anprobierens und des Wählens von Konsumobjekten sowie verschiedene Diskurse analysiert, die diese Shoppingpraktiken als 'modern' oder 'rückständig' etikettieren. Es zeigt sich, dass Studierende in Shoppingmall-Geschäften und an Marktständen jeweils unterschiedliche Verhältnisse zu Objekten und zu sich selbst einüben – und damit auch unterschiedliche situationsspezifische Subjektivitäten entwickeln. Diese multiplen Subjektivitäten werden allerdings von Modernisierungsdiskursen begleitet, die ihre Unterschiedlichkeit als Ungleichzeitigkeit interpretieren und in den Rahmen einer 'kolonialen Zeitlichkeit' stellen.
