This thesis is concerned with linear and nonlinear optical effects in integrated optics. Specifically, it experimentally characterises the optical waveguiding properties of a glass material doped with the semiconductor compound CdSSe for use in the visible wavelength spectrum. This material is commercially available as coloured filter glass. An available waveguide technology and potentially ultra-fast nonlinear response times makes this material an attractive proposition for all-optical nonlinear switching devices. The work develops the use of ion-exchange as a waveguide technology for Semiconductor-Doped Glass (SDG) materials and uses this technique to fabricate many different integrated optical components. Singlemode waveguide structures such as Y junctions and directional couplers are initially tested to establish their efficiency and potential use in linear integrated circuits. Bi-refringence in these waveguides is qualitatively shown to have strong effects on the state of polarisation within the guides and this can present problems in designing nonlinear waveguide devices. Electro-absorbative nonlinear optical effects are introduced and discussed in terms of the Franz-Keldysh effect. These effects being demonstrated for the first time in SDG waveguide structures. This allows single-mode, fibre-optic compatible waveguide-modulators to be fabricated with potential 40GHz operating frequency (limited by electrical capacitance). It is shown that modulators fabricated with other cadmium compounds may operate in the 1.3μm to 1.5μm infra-red wavelength spectrum suitable for fibre-optic communications networks. All-optical nonlinear effects are also investigated in single-mode SDG waveguides. This is a resonant nonlinearity within the absorption edge of the filter glass and can be described by a band-filling nonlinear effect in the semiconductor material. Because the CdSSe exists as nanometre sized crystallites within the glass host, free-carrier recombination times in the glass waveguides have been measured on a picosecond time scale. In collaboration with research workers in Arizona, USA, this has been the first reported demonstration of such effects in SDG single-mode channel waveguides. The work on linear, electro-optical, and all-optical properties in SDG waveguides allows for design of low scale integrated active circuits. All-optical nonlinear components in SDG are designed and qualified as to practical use. These devices include all-optical nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometers and nonlinear directional couplers. Operation of both devices is examined theoretically to show the nonlinear switching characteristics and thermal heating effects of partially absorbed high intensity laser beams in the glass waveguides. The thermal effects are applied to optically nonlinear glass based materials other than CdSSe SDG to show that in general, thermal effects limit the maximum operating frequency of present day all-optical nonlinear switching devices to below ITHz. This work shows that the semiconductor-doped glass concept is particularly convenient for fabricating linear and nonlinear integrated optical circuits and outlines the direction for future work on this subject.
