The purpose of this study was to examine character racial, ethnic, and gender representation of main and secondary of apps designed for preschoolers using a quantitative content analysis. Because of the design of characters for apps differs from other forms of media, this study examined traits associated with racial, ethnic, and gender groups physically presented on the characters. To implement a research approach that considered the technological features of tablets and critical investigation of media characters, this study used Black Feminist theory and child-computer interaction to inform its method, instrument to code characters' racial, ethnic, and gendered traits, and analyze the data.Using recommendations from children's media review websites and online publications that center the interests of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and marginalized gender (MaGe) communities, this content analysis generated a sample of 105 preschool apps and 329 characters. Character traits used to determine racial, ethnic, and gender affiliation in previous children's media studies were used in this study's coding instrument. Some findings from this study mirror those of previous of characters in children's media, in which there is a dominance of certain physical traits. In other cases, the findings suggest an invitation to applying other social constructs, such as colorism, when analyzing characters' physical traits.This study concludes with tailored recommendations for researchers, educators, and developers, which are based on findings and lessons learned from conducting this study, that they can apply to their practice and future work.
