Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining popularity as a primary healthcare system. Healthcare providers are more often expected to become leaders for their patients, and in their communities. There is very little leadership training in TCM schools. Leadership training develops confidence and reduces burnout, which increases patient satisfaction and safety. The goal of this qualitative case study was to assess the need for leadership competencies within TCM education to prepare students to become leaders in the constantly evolving healthcare world. Deans or directors of nine these schools were interviewed to collect their thoughts and beliefs providing a complete overview of the program and profession needs. Participants were interviewed via Zoom. The interviews were recorded and analyzed for themes. The study examined the following research questions, what leadership skills or competencies are needed in the DAOM curriculum courses, what strategies can be used to administer leadership competencies within the DAOM degree, and how can leadership skills competencies be used to support student success. All nine participants agreed that leadership competencies and skills should be taught in TCM education. The most commonly requested and mentioned competencies were communication and collaboration. Mentoring and case studies were the most mentioned or desired mode of delivery for teaching leadership competencies. This paper concludes by suggesting that leadership competencies be included in TCM education to support student success.
