Purpose. The major purpose of this study was to determine whether the Quick Neurological Screening Test (QNST) is valid to differentiate among the normal, learning disabled, and educable mentally retarded students in Taiwan, the Republic of China. Methodology. Ninety subjects, 30 identified as learning disabled students, 30 educable mentally retarded students, and 30 nonhandicapped students (normal), were used in this study. Subjects ranged in age from 6-5 to 12-11 years (grades ranged from first to sixth). The normal and educable mentally retarded subjects were randomly selected from elementary schools in Taipei City. The sample of the learning disabled represented the total population of the learning disabled students currently served in Taiwan, the Republic of China. The instrument used in this study was a Chinese translation of the ONST which consists of 15 observed tasks. A qualified professional educator was employed to administer the test individually to the sampled students. A single blind was built into the study to insure anonymity as to whether the student tested was from the learning disabled, the educable mentally retarded, or the normal sample populations. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses. The Scheffe method of multiple comparisons was employed to locate the significant differences. Findings. The total scores of the QNST differentiated between the performance of the normal and the learning disabled populations, between the performance of the normal and the educable mentally retarded populations, and between the performance of the learning disabled and educable mentally retarded populations. Twelve of the 15 subtests showed significant differences with one subtest, Eye-Tracking, showing unusual power when compared with other tests. Recommendations. Based on findings of this study, it is recommended: (1) The QNST may be used as a general screening instrument prior to the administration of a full battery of tests in Taiwan, the Republic of China. (2) Further studies should be conducted to determine the predictive validity of the QNST as compared with the total assessment/identification procedure.
