The study examined how sex composition of a dyad, and dyadic locus of control influence cooperative/competitive behavior in Chinese and American children on a game-like task. The hypotheses tested were: (1) Chinese children will be more external and cooperative than American children. (2) Girl-girl dyads will be more cooperative than boy-boy dyads. (3) Dyads matched on externality will be more cooperative than those matched on internality. Research questions examined include: whether boys and girls differ on locus of control; how the cooperative/competitive behavior of mixed locus of control dyads compares with that of homogeneous locus of control dyads; whether the effects of sex and locus of control of dyads differ in the two cultural groups; and whether cooperative behavior changes across trials. The study consisted of a 2 x 3 x 3 between subject design. The factors were cultural background (Chinese or American), locus of control (homogeneous external dyads or internals, and mixed external/internal dyads), and sex of dyad (boys, girls, and mixed, consisting of one boy and one girl). Initially, subjects consisting of 1,706 11- to 13-years-old children: 1,316 Chinese from Taipei, Taiwan, and 392 White Americans from New York City, were administered the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children. From the initial sample, 100 Chinese and 100 American children (50 boys and 50 girls, with equal numbers of internals and externals in each sex group) were selected to participate in the main phase of the study. Subjects were blocked on cultural group, sex, and locus of control, and randomly paired into dyads. Dyads then played the Cooperation Game Board for 12 trials, wherein they were required to move a marker toward either a jointly or individually rewarded goal. Dependent measures were trial latency, choice of goals, and turn-taking behavior. The results indicated: Locus of control scores did not differ between cultural groups or between sexes. Chinese were more cooperative than Americans only in terms of turn-taking behavior. Girl dyads were more cooperative than boy dyads on both latency and turn-taking measures. External dyads were more cooperative than internal dyads on latency.
