According to the American Cancer Society (2023), over 1.9 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the US in 2023. Using a chronic pain module introduced in the 2019 National Health Interview Survey edition, Yong et al. (2022) established that 50.2 million adults reported daily pain on most days. Though research has expanded surrounding resilience and health conditions, such as cancer, few studies have focused on the construct of resilience, or a resilience-based approach related to chronic pain. There have been ample discussions on different definitions of resilience or whether resilience is a trait, process, or outcome, but most researchers concur that resilience is demonstrated when positive adaptation occurs within the context of adversity. Resilience is a topic that has been well researched, and there has been a lot of empirical data that those with higher resilience have a better quality of life. This dissertation sought to investigate whether individuals with chronic health issues such as cancer or chronic pain have greater self-reported resilience than those with neither medical condition. It also examined which of these groups reported a higher quality of life. The study demonstrated that for both objectives, there were minimal differences between groups with both cancer and chronic pain, cancer only, chronic pain only, or neither condition, nor were the results significant. Additionally, the study proposed that resilience would not differ between the cancer-only and chronic pain-only groups. The study results indicated a minimal but not statistically significant difference in resilience between participants with cancer (M = 70.64) and those with chronic pain (M= 67.73). However, a small effect size (d =.31) warrants further studies in the future. Lastly, this study examined the correlation between resilience and the personality domains of Extraversion and Emotional Stability. Results revealed that resilience was positively correlated with Extraversion and Emotional Stability.
