With the sudden movement to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a need to understand the impact on teachers and their ability to facilitate learning in the online setting during this time period in the hopes of understanding and improving on such practices in the future. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of teachers who were required to teach online because of the COVID-19 pandemic about online teaching at a North Alabama high school district. The study's theoretical framework used Harasim's (2012) online collaborative learning theory that focuses on the internet as a means of providing a learning environment to encourage collaboration and knowledge building. A qualitative case study was chosen to understand the experiences of 10 participants from North Alabama high schools in an independent school district. Data collection was done by receiving anonymous responses to a survey using Qualtrics. Data were analyzed through open coding, grouping into categories, and using thematic analysis to identify themes. The following three themes were identified: teacher challenges with support, teacher challenges with quality of instruction, and teachers' perceptions of flexibility with online teaching. Teachers in this study described struggles with lack of support from administration and parents as a challenge for engaging students in learning and ensuring discipline and rigor, difficulty with the lack of access to technology resources for students to ensure quality instruction, and the positive benefits of instructional flexibility when it comes to teaching and disseminating information in the online learning environment.
