Linguistic landscapes (LL) are the language visible to us in our surroundings, for example signs or for mobile LL, department store bags. This study identifies a fashion LL in Japan that is composed of messages printed on clothes in odd or mistaken English. While often amusing, they have the potential to be embarrassing for the wearer and/or shocking to the reader. English study is required in Japanese schools and yet English is not well-comprehended by most people. In this study Japanese high school students completed a month-long LL project involving surveys, translations of shirts, creation of shirts, and writing reflections on the experience. The aims were to identify the extent to which Japanese young people are aware of the meaning in their fashion LL, how that awareness changes, and to evaluate the usefulness of using LL as a pedagogical text in the classroom using Rowland's (2013) analysis of LL pedagogical benefits. At the beginning of the study, students overwhelmingly saw their fashion LL as "cool" based on the appearance of Roman alphabet fonts, reported that they would almost never wear a shirt with a Japanese message on it that others could read, and that they considered the English meaning to be irrelevant and the appearance is all they care about. Through the process of repeated translations and group presentations they were surprised by and often disappointed in many of their shirts' literal meanings; some decided they would translate clothing before purchase, others thought they might not wear English language clothes any longer, and a few still felt the meaning to be irrelevant. Many were surprised to learn that sexual messages on shirts appear almost exclusively on girls' and women's shirts. There are several benefits to pedagogical LL, including pragmatic language learning, multimodal literacy, and incidental language learning. Implications of this study are that LL texts are important for learners to investigate. Although students did not believe that others read or can understand the English on their shirts and said that these shirts have been worn for their cool factor, this attitude can delegitimize minorities and minority opinions in Japan.
