The problem to be addressed in this study is workplace role stressors resulting in reduced job performance among compliance officers working in the health care field in Chicago. Pressure placed on an employee based on a particular role they perform within the workplace environment is concomitant with what is known as role stress. Role stress has the propensity to decrease work performance and thereby impacts both the employee as well as the organization. Constructs of role stress are role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload, and are henceforth referred to collectively as role stressors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to examine the perception of role legitimacy, workplace role stressors on changes in job performance, and mechanisms used to cope with work-related stress. The theoretical framework for this study was guided with the use of role theory (RT), particularly the theory of role dynamics to construct the framework that lends to the perceived impact of role stress. This research study focused on the perceived effect of role stress on the compliance professional's ability to perform risk mitigating activities within the health care environment. There was a total of 15 participants possessing at least one year of employment within in the last 7 years working as a compliance professional at the level of an officer or director in the health care field in Chicago, Illinois, who answered semi-structured open-ended questions designed to explore the participants lived experience and attain insight on how they perceived work-related stress in the field of compliance. Data was analyzed and five themes were generated enabling a more detailed and focused analysis of the perceived effect of the role stress constructs on compliance professional work performance. The implications of the study results show that a significant relationship exists between the stressors that compliance leadership professionals experience and how they are able to perform their risk mitigation activities. Recommendations for current practice includes options that increase the authority and autonomy of the compliance leadership professional, improve access to resources, and establish solutions aimed at building resilience to cope with workplace stress. Recommendations for future research should focus on the effectiveness of role clarity in mitigating the experience of role stress, as well as study stress and the mitigating effect of resilience training.
