Academic shared governance has attracted much scholarly attention in recent years because the rapidly changing landscape of higher education has placed it under increasing strain. Within this wider context, the special circumstances of seminaries and schools of theology has been little addressed, although these institutions present unique challenges and opportunities for shared governance. The literature review surveys the modern history of academic shared governance, its current crisis, and the particular challenges that confront theological schools. It then considers older ecclesiastical understandings of shared governance, based in synodality and Benedictine monastic tradition. The corporate model that developed in the mid-20th century presumes an understanding of shared governance in which different groups of specialists are responsible for different things, and it was forged during a time of conflict between faculty, trustees, and presidents as an attempt to broker a truce. The monastic model assumes that each person within the system is fundamentally a generalist who has concern for the whole system, and who might at different points in their vocational life occupy different positions within that system. This thesis argues that there is no single correct way to live into the value of shared governance, and that the Benedictine model remains the most appropriate one for small, mission-focused organizations such as seminaries. It further argues that all institutions of higher education would benefit from a new understanding of shared governance that does not presume an adversarial relationship between different constituencies, and which instead encourages them to work collaboratively for the common good of the organization.
