Using participatory action research and a technofeminist rhetorical theoretical framework, this study considered what a collaborative writing process mediated by digital technology could look like when inclusion was a goal of the writing process. The study focused on writing team members' perceptions of inclusion in co-creating a digital annual report at a social justice organization in East Tennessee. The findings of this study indicated that a step toward inclusion in digitally-mediated collaborative writing is to recognize that digitally-mediated collaborative writing is an organizational process deserving of scrutiny based on inclusivity. Another key finding was that inclusion requires time to achieve because inclusion is based on collaboration, which can require more time than independent work.Other findings indicate that intentional planning, conversation, policies, and team self-assessment could facilitate inclusion. The planning process could include discussions about what digital tools will be used and optional training on digital tools for writing team members. Conversation topics could include the following: the purpose, audience, and content of the document; the timeline for document production and the role each writing team member will play based on other workplace commitments; the type of language that will be used in the document, including the avoidance of jargon; how edits will be handled; and organizational processes that might hinder collaboration and inclusion. Policies that might facilitate inclusion include setting situationally-specific expectations for inclusion in digitally-mediated collaborative writing and encouraging inter-dependence among co-writers (and co-workers). Post-co-creation team self-assessment may also facilitate inclusion in digitally-mediated collaborative writing.One implication of the study was that intentionality, accountability, troubleshooting may be attributes of digital writing teams moving toward inclusion. Also, the study implied that situating inclusion and digitally-mediated collaborative writing as affective processes could highlight the social nature of the processes to indicate points of social interaction where interventions could be made to facilitate inclusion. Another implication was that two additional tasks-training and troubleshooting--be added to Lowry et al.'s (2004) taxonomy of digitally-mediated collaborative writing. Additionally, methodological implications included the value of a letter of accountability from the academic researcher to community-based researchers and self-assessment by the academic researcher about reciprocity in participatory action research.
