Milton Babbitt is regarded as one of the most important serial composers in the world today. He has extended 12-tone principles to virtually all musical dimensions and as a theorist and teacher has had a profound impact on several generations of composers. His music presents a formidable challenge to performers and is played much less frequently than it should be. The purpose of this study is to provide the necessary background for the comprehension of Babbitt's music and to analyze his works for the piano with the intention of performing them. Chapter I outlines Babbitt's musical studies and intellectual background including his teachers and the composers who influenced his development. Babbitt's adoption and extension of Schoenberg's 12-tone principles and the conceptions of combinatoriality, aggregate structure, serial rhythmic structure, and use of the electronic media for the realization of his compositions are discussed. Chapter II is an inquiry into the responsibility of performers and listeners for their experience of meaning in the perception of musical objects, particularly those composed in an unfamiliar language. The role of analysis in furthering the understanding and experiencing of Babbitt's music is examined. The views of various contemporary composers and theorists are presented in historical perspective to create a philosophical and aesthetic context appropriate to the study of Babbitt's music. The researcher has also drawn upon phenomenological models which allow a shift in emphasis from analysis back to perception. Chapter III-VII contain analyses of all the piano works (including Reflections for Piano and Synthesized Tape) composed by Babbitt up until 1976. The selection of these works which span a period of nearly 30 years was made with a view not only of providing insight into Babbitt's use of the piano as a compositional medium but also to trace the development of his musical language in a single body of works. Each of the piano works employs a different solution to the problem of interrelating the dimensions of pitch, rhythm, dynamics and attack, according to serial principles. The particular compositional premises of the individual works suggest different modes of analysis. These in turn place each work within the context of Babbitt's constantly evolving use of the 12-tone system illustrating its potential for a rich and intricate syntax...
