The purpose of this study was to analyze Act4Change, an adaptation of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO), and examine how it may function as a community engagement pedagogy in the South Bronx, New York. Case study research through an arts-based inquiry explored Act4Change as a community engagement strategy for the practice of democratic education in communities of struggle. Specific attention was paid to the interplay between theory and practice and the consequent problem of praxis. The investigation engaged in a beginning discourse on community engagement pedagogy as creative capacity building for communities of struggle. Through academic and qualitative action research, the study theoretically examined how Act4Change intersected with and diverged from TO's theoretical premises to create new ways of thinking and knowing. As a TO practitioner, the intention was to specifically respond to prevalent questions impacting education today, including privilege, community, and the problem of praxis in TO. By focusing on TO facilitation as a community engagement pedagogy, this study shifted the attention somewhat away from formal educational sites to recognize that progressive and democratic education occurs in communities and through performance-based strategies.
