Writings on Charles Edward Ives (1874-1954) have often worked with two basic assumptions: the Ives Legend (his supposed isolation during the 1920s and 1930s) and the Ives Myth (his lack of influence on American music prior to World War II). Both of these concepts are examined, revealing the misconceptions that plague scholarship on the composer. This study of Ives' little-known influence on American music--critics, musicians, and composers--during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s is divided into two inter-related sections: first, a history of the criticism of his music, 1920 to 1939 (1920--the year he published the Essays and the Concord Sonata; 1939--the year John Kirkpatrick performed the Concord in New York City); and, second, an account of Ives' influence on young American composers, 1924 to 1947 (the year he was awarded the Pulitzer prize for music). The first part traces the critical response to both the publications of Ives' music and writings and the performances of his compositions, and is accompanied by an appendix outlining the major events (writings, music publications, performances, and recordings) in the career of Ives' music and a chronological bibliography of criticism, 1920-1939. The second portion highlights the influence of Ives on the early work of a group of young American composers (Israel Citkowitz, Lou Harrison, Bernard Herrmann, Jerome Moross, Robert Palmer, and Elie Siegmeister), with chapters devoted to Herrmann, Siegmeister, and Palmer. Bibliographies and lists of works pertaining to the early careers of these three composers are included as appendices. This study will show that, contrary to popular opinion, Ives' music and writings did exert a tremendous influence upon American music, from 1920 through the end of World War II.
