This research presents the experimental and simulation results of a smart health monitoring system (SHM) using piezoelectric transducers to detect temperature and damage induced signal changes. Eight IM7 carbon/epoxy quasi-isotropic coupons were fabricated and then damaged with low speed impact velocities ranging from 1.73 m/s to 2.18 m/s. The signals were post-processed with a custom-made Matlab code and based on Lamb wave propagation analysis. A 45 V, 20 dB gain, 5-peak tone burst signal was transmitted at 250 kHz via an array of piezoelectric transducers (PZT) in a pitch-catch mode. PZTs were installed at the four edges of the coupons, and their signals were analyzed in the frequency and time domain. The identification and selection of a well-defined wave packet for each signal were used to acquire information on signal speed and its variation, phase shift, and changes in signal amplitude and power. Temperature-related signal changes were detected using peak amplitudes and time stamps information. Damage detection and related location identification were attempted by extrapolating information on wave packet velocity, damage index, illumination parameter, and peak power changes. The impact simulation and damage determination were performed via Abaqus using vendor-published engineering constants. These were validated by tensile and flexural tests on fabricated coupons as per ASTM Standard procedures. Possible manufacturing issues, post processing pitfalls, and the path forward are discussed.
