The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to find if and to what extent a relationship exists between the leadership style of younger leaders and the emotional well-being of their older nurse subordinates. The theoretical foundations that underpin the study were the full range leadership model that includes transactional, transformational, and passive/avoidant leadership styles and the social comparison theory. Six research questions (RQ) guided the study to answer the extent a relationship exists between positive emotional well-being and leadership styles (RQ1-RQ3) and negative emotional well-being and leadership styles (RQ4-RQ6). A purposive sampling method obtained the sample n = 103 from an academic acute care hospital system in Colorado. The participants completed an online interleaved survey that included the Job-Related Affective Well-Being Scale (JAWS) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ 5X). The results of the Pearson's r correlational analysis indicated a statistically significant positive relationship existed between positive emotional well-being and transformational leadership style (rp = 0.39, p < .001), and negative emotional well-being and passive/avoidant leadership style (rp = 0.35, p < .001). A statistically significant negative relationship existed between positive emotional well-being and passive/avoidant leadership style (rp = -0.26, p = .008), and negative emotional well-being and transformational leadership style (rp = -0.34, p < .001). These results provided that emotional well-being is related to leadership style among older nurse subordinates reporting to younger leaders. The findings of this study may be helpful to developing younger nurse leaders in age-inverse leader-follower contexts.
