This qualitative phenomenological research study explored first-generation African American and Latinx undergraduate students and their perceptions of mindfulness practices in First-year experience courses. This research study provided insights into first-generation undergraduate students of color (FGUSOC) and their feelings about the benefits of mindfulness-related activities and how mindfulness can help them manage college-related challenges. The theoretical foundation of this research study was Social Cognitive Theory (SCT).This research study utilized a qualitative methodology and transcendental phenomenological design, which focuses on exploring and identifying the experiences and perceptions of African American and Latinx undergraduate students who completed the First-Year Experience course in the Fall 2022 semester within a single research site, a private liberal arts college in northern Georgia. The six instruments used to gather the data for this study were semi-structured interviews, demographic questionnaires, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), researcher notes, and member checking. Data were analyzed using the modified Braun and Clarke (2006) six-step process.Five themes resulted from the data analysis: 1. experiences, 2. quality of life in college, 3. the need for a sense of community, 4. mindfulness-related assignments, and 5. self-efficacy. Ultimately, findings from this research study can assist college administrators in investigating the benefits of intentionally incorporating mindfulness in First-Year Experience courses to support all students, especially first-generation undergraduate students of color (FGUSOC).
