Researchers in various fields have observed that in everyday interaction, play activities or frames are linguistically and multimodally bound off from others (e.g., Bateson, 1972; Goffman, 1974; Shore, 1996). Scholars who focus on language have demonstrated the complexity of play frames: aspects of a play activity can leak into non-play (e.g., Tannen and Wallat, 1993; Buchbinder, 2008) and play frames can be blended with non-play to achieve multiple goals (e.g., Gordon, 2008). Building on this previous work, this study delves into the complexity of "play" and "non-play," and more generally the complexity of framing in discourse, by focusing on an understudied type of play - card and board games played among young adult friends. Specifically, it shows how three essential activities - participants' negotiation of game rules, management of misunderstandings, and mobilization and negotiation of game-related knowledge - are at once play and nonplay. In other words, the study shows that players use linguistic and multimodal strategies to create "rough edges" between "real life" and the "pretend" world of the game in the domains of rules, intersubjectivity, and knowledge.First, I analyze how game rules are oriented to and (re)created by participants when (perceived) transgressions are made salient. Specifically, I demonstrate the ways in which the players use linguistic resources (e.g., directives, negations, repetitions) and multimodal resources (e.g., gaze, finger-pointing) to perform, evaluate, and sanction instances of rule violation. Second, I investigate how participants manage instances of miscommunication that arise during gameplay (e.g., misrecognized references and what Gumperz 1982 calls "contextualization cues"). Drawing on the concept of repair (Schegloff et al., 1977), I show how players overcome problems in understanding and (re)establish intersubjectivity through embodied acts, adjusting the frame and the participation framework, depending on who initiates and pursues the repair. Third, I draw on epistemics as an approach to knowledge management (Heritage, 2012a) to show how players bring real-world knowledge (knowledge about other fellow players and everyday terms) into the game play frame and the related "explanation of game play" frame, therefore revealing the nuanced ways that game play frames and "real life" frames are intertwined.Through the micro-analysis of board game play among friends, this study furthers our understanding of how players navigate the fuzzy boundary of play and non-play. More broadly, it lends insights into the linguistic and multimodal management of what Bateson (1972) refers to as the "muddles" and "untidiness" of the interactions that make up everyday life.
