The current study attempts to provide additional insight to the native speaker issue by looking at the case of Singapore English speakers. An online survey containing audio samples of American and Singaporean speech and a series of statements was distributed to American (US) and Singaporean (SG) participants. Participants listened to samples then rated their level of agreement with each statement. The data was separated into three categories, "nativeness" rating, status ratings, and solidarity ratings. Singapore English speech was perceived as less "native" than American English speech, and this perception correlated with being perceived as less proficient, fluent, and natural in English. Under a definition where a "native speaker" acquires the language in childhood and is widely understood by other speakers, L1 Singapore English speakers would be categorized as native. Despite this, they are judged to be less native by both US and SG listeners.
