This thesis examines the progression of the United States into the Pacific via unofficial support for the Japanese during the Russian-Japanese War in 1904-1905. While other scholars have examined Roosevelt's policies and the war in detail, this thesis will argue that the United States wanted more influence within the Pacific. Roosevelt ignored congress's warning of Japanese expansion into the Pacific and control over trade. Roosevelt completely supported the Japanese throughout the talks which resulted with Japan gaining control in the Pacific after peace was conducted. Japan excelled in diplomacy and had won over American opinion and Roosevelt's. By the end of the war, Japan had further advanced toward control over Korea and gained a sphere of influence throughout the Pacific that ran contrary to the Open Door policy that the United States truly wanted upheld. In addition to offering insights into the complexity of United States diplomacy in the Asian Pacific, conclusions also reveal the complex dynamics of peace negotiations.
