Background. Research has shown that vibration therapy has the ability to improve range of motion and increase strength. However, the influence of localized vibration therapy on shoulder range of motion, strength, and pain in patients following rotator cuff repair surgery is not well researched. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference between manual therapy and localized vibration therapy on shoulder range of motion, strength, and pain in a patient following rotator cuff repair surgery. Literature review. A comprehensive literature review was conducted. Six articles were included in the review. Current literature supports the use of whole body vibration therapy in improving leg strength and balance in the elderly population. However, there is very little research on localized vibration therapy in the rotator cuff repair population. Case description. The patient was a 77-year-old female who underwent rotator cuff repair surgery. Active shoulder range of motion, manual muscle tests, and pain via the visual analog scale (VAS) were used as outcome measures. Manual therapy was performed followed by localized vibration therapy. The patient demonstrated increased active shoulder abduction range of motion and strength and decreased pain per the VAS following manual therapy. Following localized vibration therapy, the patient had a further increase in active shoulder abduction range of motion and strength in addition to a greater reduction in pain. Discussion. The findings of this study suggest that the addition of localized vibration therapy to manual therapy may be beneficial in improving active shoulder range of motion, strength, and pain in rotator cuff repair patients.
