Body composition testing is often used in athletics as an assessment tool to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and nutritional interventions. This practice has the potential to increase the risk of developing disordered eating as it emphasizes body size and shape rather than physical performance. The purpose of this research was to determine if frequency of body composition testing increased disordered eating behavior in female collegiate athletes. Thirty-nine females completed a questionnaire on demographics, body composition testing history, menstrual status, and eating behaviors via the Female Athlete Screening Tool (FAST). Results indicated that higher frequency of testing had a significant effect on FAST scores (p = 0.008) when studied individually. When other covariates were included, these results became nonsignificant (p = 0.707). Coaches should minimize the frequency of body composition testing in female athletes to mitigate the potentially harmful effects on disordered eating.
