Climate change has brought on more extreme heat conditions that increases the risk of heat illness across various occupations and recreation activities. There are known sex differences in thermoregulation and its impact on workload and performance that stem from the innate physiological variations in anthropometrics and workload capacity between men and women. However, these differences have not been investigated in trained women, let alone women with a resistance exercise background. The objective in this study was to conduct exercise bouts in hot and thermoneutral environments on women who are either endurance/aerobic (ET) or resistance (RT) trained to characterize and compare physiologic, perceptual, and neurocognitive responses. ET and RT women completed a 75-minute bout of walking exercise at 60% VO2 peak in both HOT (33°C, 50% rh) and NEUTRAL (21°C, 50% rh) conditions where physiologic, perceptual, and neurocognitive measures were recorded pre-, during, and post-exercise. There were no significant differences between the two groups in mean heart rate values and rectal temperature responses throughout all the respective time points during exercise in the HOT and NEUTRAL condition. There were no significant differences between the two groups in mean rating of perceived exertion (RPE) response throughout the respective time points during exercise in the HOT condition and all time points during exercise in the NEUTRAL condition except for the 60-minute mark where there was a significant different in mean RPE response between ET and RT women (p=.028). There were no significant differences in other perceptual responses between the two groups. In addition, there were no significant differences between the groups in the difference in cognitive scores before and after exercise in each condition except for the ET group who had a higher difference in Flanker score after exercise in the NEUTRAL condition (p=.024). These results suggest that the training adaptations induced through participating in resistance exercise allow women to tolerate aerobic-based exercise in hot and thermoneutral conditions to a similar degree as women with an endurance (aerobic) exercise background along physiologic, perceptual, and neurocognitive domains.
