The fresco cycle Masaccio (1401-1428) painted in the Brancacci Chapel located in Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, is one of the most celebrated works of art of the early Italian Renaissance. From an art-historical perspective, a visual analysis of Masaccio's work of art, conducted especially after the Chapel's restoration in the 1990s by Umberto Baldini and Ornella Casazza, can demonstrate Masaccio's artistic achievement and technical innovations. This dissertation aims to provide a fresh perspective on Masaccio's work by analyzing its cultural context and symbolic meanings within the complex religious, ethical, social, and economic milieu of fifteenth-century Florence.While previous scholars, like Nicholas Eckstein, have examined the Chapel's decorations in relation to evolving cultural dynamics, this study takes a step further by arguing that the frescoes encompass both religious and political dimensions. They offer visual references to the prevalent issues of poverty, disease, and mortality, particularly among the working class, women, and children. Within the frescoes, solutions to these societal challenges are depicted through acts of charity and almsgiving.This interdisciplinary approach delves into the Brancacci Chapel's interaction with the broader cultural, religious, and socio-economic landscape of fifteenth-century Florence. By doing so, it provides a deeper understanding of the frescoes' multifaceted meanings and ethical questions. The relevance of these themes persists today, as contemporary societies continue to grapple with issues of poverty and unequal resource distribution.
