This dissertation offers a new method for evaluating Jan van Eyck's painting, Madonna and Child with Chancellor Rolin (c. 1435). This method is described as polyvalent in that it embraces complexities and tensions within van Eyck's cultural context to allow for multiple meanings to exist for a single panel painting. While interdisciplinarity already existed in scholarship on van Eyck, a polyvalent method takes a deeper dive into selected disciplines to reveal the variety of beliefs and perspectives in each of these areas. This deeper investigation is necessary because of the unique cultural moment of van Eyck's context in late, medieval Flanders. For a period of approximately 80 years, under the rule of the Valois line of dukes, the culture of Flanders demonstrated a coalescing of formerly contrary values from the French and Netherlandish, the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie, luxury and piety, among others. A polyvalent method describes how each of these characteristics shaped the painting's interpretation and as well as the painter, donor, and the members of its original audience.This dissertation asserts that the greatest difficulty in the interpretation of the Madonna and Child with Chancellor Rolin is understanding its original context and the ways in which it diverged from the broader culture of medieval Europe. The first half of this dissertation, "Building the Cultural Lens," explores the complexity-or polyvalence-of values and meaning in van Eyck's context in the areas of politics, sociology, religion, and the arts. It highlights and embraces seemingly contradictory ideas that coexisted in van Eyck's culture. Part One closes with a proposal for a polyvalent method of interpretating van Eyck's works.Part Two of this dissertation, "Looking Through the Cultural Lens" applies a socio-religious polyvalent method to the Madonna and Child with Chancellor Rolin. The painting is dominated by the image of its donor, Chancellor Nicolas Rolin, kneeling before the seated Mary and infant Christ. The figures and their setting are filled with finely painted, realistic details which most art historians believe to hold significance to the artist and donor. Yet, previous art historians' methods of investigation and resultant findings revealed disagreement about cultural influences on the meaning or intention of the painting. In applying a polyvalent method, each character and detail is interpreted based on cultural knowledge from Part One and the visual language shared by van Eyck and his contemporaries. The resultant interpretation offers multiple, simultaneous meanings and functions for the panel. Part Two also upholds that the painting is an Andachtsbild, a devotional image that has its own agency in mediating the holy and true. As such, it has the ability to convey meaning beyond what was intended by donor and painter.This dissertation demonstrates that the painting cohesively functions as a tool for self-promotion, memorial remembrance, liturgical worship, and contemplative devotion. This interpretation breaks new ground in applying medieval hermeneutics and illustrated Bibles to biblical scenes in the architecture. It also asserts that the event depicted in the painting is loving unity with God, reached through Rolin's contemplative devotion and aided by Mary's intercession. Finally, it argues that, as an Andachtsbild, a true and polyvalent experiential interpretation of the Madonna and Child with Chancellor Rolin cannot happen apart from both cultural knowledge and devotional engagement with the painting.
