This study attempts to clarify and characterize Johann Sebastian Bach's crucial role in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century music history by mining the reception of his most influential work during this period, the Well-Tempered Clavier. Eschewing a comprehensive, narrative approach, I focus rather on some particularly important episodes in WTC reception during the time between Bach's death and the founding of the Bach-Gesellschaft, as epitomized especially in the work of four different individuals: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Samuel Wesley, Friedrich Rochlitz, and Carl Czerny. Using the WTC reception of each as a window onto highly contrasting aspects of the musical thought and practice of this central era in the Western classical tradition, the separate chapters explore Bach's significance to the study of counterpoint among composers, the relationship of local practice to national ideology, the interplay of aesthetic theory and music criticism, and the changing philosophy of music editing, respectively. By elucidating four of the most important components of Bach's posthumous career, this dissertation contributes to our understanding of the musical culture of this first age to turn decisively to past art works for inspiration, instruction, and edification.
