As IT organizations begin to adopt Development Operations (DevOps) methodologies at higher rates, proprietary DevOps platform providers continue developing specialized solutions for these organizations. The specialized solutions provided by DevOps platform providers can put IT organizations in a position to become vendor-locked. This generic qualitative inquiry examined organizational goals and vendor limitations to answer the question What is the perceived impact of proprietary DevOps platforms on strategic IT development? A sample of ten IT professionals with five years of experience who use a proprietary DevOps platform and know IT organizational goals were interviewed to understand the perceptions of the impact that proprietary DevOps platforms have on respective IT organization goals. Previous studies have focused on the role of vendor lock-in DevOps implementation and presented two categories of vendor lock-in as vendor-locked and not vendor-locked. This study focused on the perceived impact of proprietary DevOps platform providers on strategic IT development, which could vendor-lock IT organizations. This study indicates that vendor limitations can develop a need for IT organizations to modify their organizational goals regardless of vendor-lock status. This study also indicates that there are four categories of vendor lock-in, as opposed to the two presented in previous studies. The categories presented in this study were vendor-locked: hindered, vendor-locked: unhindered, not vendor-locked: hindered, and not vendor-locked: unhindered. The newly presented categories suggest that perceptions of IT professionals regarding vendor lock-in have shifted as organizations can now facilitate their organizational goals while vendor-locked and can be hindered when not vendor-locked. The findings of this study could help IT organizations better plan for cloud migration and DevOps platform adoption.
