The effects of a one-month yoga intervention meeting one time per week for 30 minutes on bilateral hip extension range of motion center of mass while walking, fear of falling, and walking speed. Seven participants (5 female,2 males) with a mean age of 70 ± 6 years old were naive to yoga but were current exercisers (strength training and endurance training) met the inclusion criteria. Hip extension measured with goniometry, fear of falling assessed using the Fall Efficacy Scale-International questionnaire, and 10-meter walk to determine center of mass and walking speed were assessed pre- and post-4-week Vinyasa Flow yoga program meeting once a week for 30 minutes. An dependent two-tailed t-tests demonstrated a significant increase in bilateral left and right hip extension range of motion following the yoga intervention (P = .003). There were no significant differences in center of mass, walking time, and fall efficacy. Results: Bilateral hip extension range of motion had a significant increase after the yoga intervention, with both left and right sides having a p value = 0.003. Mean hip extension range of motion on the left side was 6.43°± 3.05° (plus or minus S.D.) during the pre-assessment and increased to 16°± 4.32° (plus or minus S.D.) in the post-assessment. Mean hip extension range of motion on the right side was 6.57°± 7.37° in the pre-assessment and 15°± 3.42° in post-assessment. There were no significant findings in center of mass (p=0.617), walking time (p = 0.617) or the fall efficacy questionnaire (p = 0.535) results.
