The purpose of this quantitative, correlational-predictive study was to determine if, and to what extent, public quality-of-care scores for five clinical cohorts predicted publicly reported, hospital prices for that care when controlling for six hospital characteristics among hospitals in three Midwestern states. Five clinical cohorts of heart failure (HF), heart attack (AMI), heart bypass surgery (CABG), COPD, and hip/knee replacement (THK) were studied with hospital characteristic covariates of beds, urban/rural, ownership, teaching status, and state. Data collection from three archival data sources achieved 886 observations. Hierarchical multiple regressions for the first two research questions found 10 statistically significant multiple regression models comprised of hospital characteristic covariates and public quality-of-cares scores for the criterion of publicly reported, hospital prices. R2 values for these 10 models exceed 0.1, F-test values exceeded 3.5, and p-values were 0.001 or less. The third research question addressed the purpose of this study because it was designed to quantify any price-quality relationship from improvement in the models' R2i by the inclusion of the quality-of-care scores in the models. This research question's results were R2HF = 0.007, ΔF(1, 233) = 2.123, p-value = 0.146 for HF; R2AMI = 0.000, ΔF(1, 136) = 0.010, p-value = 0.922 for AMI; R2CABG = 0.002, ΔF(1, 74) = 0.226, p-value = 0.636 for CABG; R2COPD = 0.006, ΔF(1, 212) = 1.835, p-value = 0.177 for COPD; and R2THK = 0.007, ΔF(1, 192) = 1.549, p-value = 0.215 for THK. No significant price-quality relationships were found because the null hypotheses were not rejected.
