The solo violin fugue reflects a unique expansion of the limits of instrument and genre. The problem of achieving polyphony on what is primarily a melodic instrument has been tackled by few composers, most successfully by Bach and Bartok. Bach's C-major fugue stands out as a pinnacle of fugal artifice for unaccompanied violin in the degree to which it achieves four-voice counterpoint. Analyzing this fugue and its successors up to the mid-twentieth century highlights the importance of artistic illusion and virtuosity in overcoming the limitations of musical medium, and illustrates how composer, performer and listener join forces to create the impression of fugue in spite of the impossibility of maintaining four literally continuous voices.
